image College students who consume cannabis on a daily or near-daily basis have a higher average GPA(grade point average) than the average GPA of all students combined. This is according to the new Inhale Labs’ Cannabis in College study[1].

The study found that the percentage of college students using cannabis on a daily or near-daily (defined as consuming cannabis at least 20 times a month) basis has reached 10.1% in 2016. This is an 171% increase from just two years ago in 2014, when daily or near-daily cannabis use was at 5.9%. In 2007 the rate was barely over a third of what it is now, at 3.5%.

“It’s not only frequent marijuana use that has seen a jump”, the study states. “One in four (24.8 percent) college students have reported using marijuana once or more in the prior 30 days, up from 21 percent in 2014 and 17 percent in 2006. An even bigger hike occurred for those who have used marijuana in the prior 12 months. The rate is currently 47 percent, up from 34 percent in 2014 and just 30 percent in 2006.”

The study found that 87% of those using cannabis daily or near daily have completed an assignment under the influence of cannabis in the prior 3 months. It was also found that 69% have gone to class under the influence in the prior 3 months and 62% have studied for an exam under the influence in the prior 6 months.”

Despite the rise in cannabis use, the study found there to be no academic reason for concern; “The average self reported GPA of all college students is 3.1. The average self reported GPA of students classified as daily or near daily users is 3.2.”

Below are the key findings of the study:

  • 10.1 percent of all students surveyed reported using marijuana daily or near daily (defined as over 20 times/month)
  • 24.8 percent of all students surveyed reported using marijuana once or more in the prior 30 days
  • 47.0 percent of all students surveyed reported using marijuana once or more in the prior 12 months
  • 22.0 percent of students classified as daily or near daily users reported having taken an exam under the influence of marijuana in the prior 3 months
  • 87.0 percent of students classified as daily or near daily users reported completing an assignment while under the influence of marijuana in the prior 30 days
  • 61.9 percent of students classified as daily or near daily users reported having studied for an exam under the influence of marijuana in the prior 3 months
  • 75.2 percent of students classified as daily or near daily users reported feeling more productive under the influence of marijuana
  • The average self reported GPA of all students is 3.1
  • The average self reported GPA of students classified as daily or near daily users is 3.2
