David Bowie's son Duncan Jones reveals he supports medical marijuana

Film director Duncan Jones has revealed his support for medical marijuana after revealing his beloved wife Rodene has found 'a world of relief' through the drug as she battles breast cancer.

Duncan, 41, the son of David Bowie, told how his 33-year-old wife has been using marijuana - which is legal in their home state of California - to ease her pain as she undergoes gruelling chemotherapy treatment.

And the award-winning director of hit movies Moon and Source Code, tweeted his appreciation for 'one of the unique aspects of living in California', adding: 'It's been both wonderful & at times hilarious to see Rodene finding a world of relief from cancer through these drugs..

The couple, who live in Los Angeles, wed in secret after Rodene, a talented photographer, was diagnosed with cancer on November 7.

Rodene has revealed that she still has six rounds of chemotherapy left, followed by a mastectomy and radiation.

And Duncan, who shaved his head in support of his wife, added: 'Those who have an issue with marijuana for medicinal use, all I can say is you have no idea what a boon it is for cancer pain management.

She does not smoke. The pharmacies here in CA have a variety of ways to partake. Ro prefers tinctures and... chocolates!

Duncan and Rodene became engaged last summer, but were prompted to marry following Rodene's diagnosis.

They then made the brave decision to make Rodene's diagnosis public and have now raised more than $6000 for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation - with a target of $11,612.

Tweeting a fellow cancer sufferer, Rodene said: 'We're r very fortunate to have our hubbies!:) Be sure to keep hydrated, eat clean, and don't count out cannabis edibles.'

Revealing that she had never done drugs before, Rodene added that she would rather take cannabis than any more 'unnatural drugs' during her chemotherapy treatments.

Duncan had spoken honestly about the moment his wife was diagnosed in December, writing: 'So I just want to tell you a little story. It may take a few tweets, but I'm hoping you'll forgive me... November was a hell of a month!

On November 4th, my beautiful fiancé @rodeneronquillo & I were, frisking about in bed, as you do. I am a boob man & found... A lump.

'It was a Sunday, so we had to wait to get an appointment to have the lump biopsied but by Wednesday, we had an answer. Cancer. Stage 2.

'We were a little overwhelmed by the news: cancer & Election Day, so decided to make it a set, ran down to the courthouse & got married! So cancer, election, marriage. All on one day! Two days later, Ro was in surgery.'

Duncan said that surgery went 'really well' and his wife was put on a 'fast track' to have chemotherapy.

He added: 'I love my wife more than anyone. She's young as can be. Women are getting breast cancer younger & younger. Women? check yourselves! ..& men?'

Posting a picture of himself with his wife - beaming as they both showed off their shaved heads - he said: 'Touch up your loved ones. You may save the life of the person you love.'

Rodene - who has changed her last name to Jones - then added: 'Life is fragile, life is precious...you can never be too grateful. Xxoo Make it great.'

Duncan is the only child of superstar Bowie and his first wife Angie Barnett, an American former model - and recently spoke of his pride for his 'very lovely and talented dad' after Bowie revealed his was releasing a new album.

Nicknamed Zowie Bowie from birth, at aged 11, Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones (Bowie’s real surname) changed his name to ‘Joe’ before, aged 18, settling on his resolutely ordinary first name, Duncan.

In 2011, he told the Mail on Sunday's Live magazine he had not seen his mother - whose drug-taking, bisexual exploits in the Seventies have been well documented - in years.

Angie lives in Arizona and Duncan said: 'We stopped communicating when I was 13 and it was the right choice then and I'm convinced it's still the right choice now.

'She's a woman who didn't have a very positive effect on my upbringing so I think it was the right move.'

And while he made it clear that he adores his father, he said: ‘I’ve certainly never used my father’s name as a way of getting a meeting. And fortunately, I’ve never needed to…’

Duncan praised his wife for helping him conquer a fear of photographers after being subjected to a barrage of camera lenses as a child while on tour with Bowie, saying:‘That dislike of being photographed stems from my childhood. There were always photographers everywhere and a big reaction that came when anyone tried to take a picture of me. It was like: “Hide him!” I was really uncomfortable with it.

‘Every night when we’d leave a concert I can remember the big hullabaloo – security guards and me being whisked into the car before my dad came out separately so that they couldn’t get a picture of us together. The woman who was looking after me would have her arms wrapped around my head so that they couldn’t get my picture. It was a big event just to get in the car and go home at the end of the day. It obviously affected me.

‘I’m much better now but it took me a while to get used to it. Fortunately my girlfriend Rodene Ronquillo is a photographer so she is slowly desensitising me.’

After starting out as an advertising director, Duncan moved on to movies and sci-fi film Moon, starring Sam Rockwell was released to universal acclaim in 2009.

Moon went on to earn Duncan a Bafta for Outstanding Debut for a Writer, Director or Producer. In his acceptance speech, Duncan was clearly overwhelmed and close to tears.

He went on to make Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhall.

The director now sees Bowie, who lives in Manhattan with his wife, supermodel Iman and their 12-year-old daughter Alexandria, as much as possible.

Duncan revealed: ‘We Skype every weekend and whenever I get the chance to go to New York we meet up. He doesn’t get to see an early cut of my films. He sees it when it’s finished. But he’s very supportive and always has been.

'He’s just a wonderful guy and father and I think he understands that I’m a creative person in my own right. He gave me the time and the support to find my feet and the confidence to do what I do.’

The one regret Duncan has from his childhood is, ironically, that he never did learn to play an instrument - even though his father was desperate for him to learn - as he said: '‘Of course, I greatly regret it now. ‘I’d love to be able to play the guitar or something else but I just don’t have the time to learn…'
